Latino Unity Day at the Illinois State Capitol: United for Health Equity and Justice

On May 11, Illinois Unidos joined advocates, organizers, and community members from across the state at the Illinois State Capitol for Latino Unity Day, a powerful day of action, unity, and advocacy.

Our team, including Executive Director Alejandra Ibañez, proudly stood alongside partners to demand policies that protect and uplift immigrant and working-class Latinx communities. This year, our presence was especially urgent as we advocated for the restoration and protection of funding for the Health Benefits for Immigrant Adults (HBIA) and Health Benefits for Immigrant Seniors (HBIS) programs.

During the event, Alejandra addressed a packed room of advocates, emphasizing the critical need to protect healthcare access for all:

“Healthcare is a human right, not a privilege. Our immigrant communities deserve dignity, respect, and access to care—regardless of status.”

Her words resonated deeply, underscoring the mission of Illinois Unidos: to center equity, racial justice, and community voice in public health and policy decisions. The Latino Unity Day gathering reminded us of the collective strength of the Latinx community in Illinois and the urgent need to defend and expand access to life-saving healthcare programs.

We thank our community partners, fellow advocates, and elected allies who continue to stand with us in this fight. Together, we are building a more just and inclusive Illinois.

¡La salud no espera! Health can’t wait.
