Illinois Unidos health navigators, Iris and David, recently attended a powerful summit in Chicago that brought together leaders, advocates, and community organizations working to defend civil rights and strengthen support systems for families across the country.

The event convened leaders from a wide range of communities, including Jewish, Christian, and Indigenous organizations, highlighting the importance of multiracial and cross-community collaboration in addressing the challenges many communities are facing today.

Congresswoman Delia Ramirez helped open the summit, emphasizing the importance of approaching this moment with hope and collective purpose. She reminded attendees that while the challenges facing communities are real, gatherings like this one are about building connections, sharing strategies, and strengthening the work organizations are doing to support families on the ground.

The summit featured a panel discussion with leaders from across the country, including Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke of New York, Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, along with legal advocates and civil rights organizers working on issues ranging from criminal justice reform to immigrant protections.

Speakers highlighted the importance of coalition-building to protect fundamental rights and ensure communities can access critical institutions without fear. One example discussed was the successful collaboration between community organizations and the Cook County Public Defender’s Office to secure a court order prohibiting civil arrests and immigration enforcement at court facilities in Cook County. The measure protects individuals seeking justice, from domestic violence survivors to tenants defending their rights, from intimidation or immigration enforcement while accessing the court system. The policy has since expanded statewide in Illinois.

Throughout the summit, speakers stressed that protecting communities requires coordination across sectors, bringing together community organizations, legal advocates, faith leaders, and policymakers to respond to emerging challenges and defend civil liberties.

For Illinois Unidos, participating in conversations like these is an important way to stay connected to the broader networks working to protect community health, safety, and dignity. These discussions reinforce the importance of collaboration, shared knowledge, and collective action in building stronger and more resilient communities.
