This past month, one of our Health Navigators, David Cruz, spoke before the school board to uplift the voices of our communities and advocate for safety, dignity, and health equity in our schools.
David shared how ongoing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity near Chicago Public Schools is creating fear and disruption for students, families, and community health workers. These conditions directly impact access to education, health services, and overall well-being, especially for immigrant communities.
During his remarks, David expressed gratitude for CPS safety protocols currently in place and emphasized the importance of Illinois House Bill 1312, which helps protect access to education and essential services by limiting harmful enforcement practices and reinforcing safe spaces for our communities.
At Illinois Unidos, we believe schools should be safe, welcoming environments where every student and family can thrive free from fear. We remain committed to collaborating with CPS and community partners to advance health education, outreach, and equity across Chicago.
